Antonio Griezmann – Atletico Madrid’s Leading Goal Scorer

By  Football Pulp - 22 February 2017

Antonio Griezmann scored a brace against Bayern Leverkusen last night, overtaking Luis Aragones’ long-standing record. The French star is now the leading goalscorer for Atletico Madrid in Europe.

Luis Aragones scored 12 goals for Atletico in the European Competitions, and he held this record for a long time. However, Griezmann scored his 13th goal for Atletico in the Champions League, and grabbed the title of the highest ever goal scorer for Rojiblancos.

The French striker has been prolific during the recent seasons and has played a pivotal role for Diego Simeon’s side, helping them reach the final of the UEFA Champions League last season. Though this season he hasn’t delivered his best but has to his credit some remarkable performances for the club, and also for the nomination for the Ballon’ D’or.

Griezmann has established himself as one of the finest strike force in Europe and has been equally good for both the club and his country. His performances not only helped France put up a brilliant show in the UEFA Euro Cup 2016 but also established him as one of the most precious talents in the region.

Strengthening the ranks of Atletico, Griezmann is not a striker by nature and was used primarily as a winger. However, after Diego Costa’s departure, he was assigned the lead role by Simeone, and he left no room proving the Argentinean’s decision right.

Last season, he was linked with moves away from Rojiblancos, and this season saw him among the hottest properties in Europe. The price tag he carries is insanely huge, but the clubs will let the money flow to have a player like Griezmann’s stature.

The 25-year-old surpassed Luis Aragones record last night and added another milestone to his resume. He can surely take his tally to an untouchable number and add many records to his name, but this won’t be possible if the rumored move to Manchester United is materialized.

It’s quite clear that Diego Simone’s departure will make way for Griezmann and he won’t waste any time to join another club. But for now, he his playing at a bigger level and Atletico is performing exceptionally in every competition.

The performances are improving brilliantly, and that’s the key to holding on to your star players. If Atletico Madrid secures a title this season, Griezmann will surely prefer to stay, or his price tag may witness a healthy increase.

If Manchester United can spend $100 million on Pogba, they surely have the capacity to spend big one more time to strengthen their strike force. Anyhow, moving to England would see Griezmann flourish in the same manner or will he be an expensive flop? We’ll have to wait to see what happens.
